o communicate with your child more effectively. While watching my two children go through this non-talking stage, I have often wondered what they are thinking or what they really want instead of trying everything in the diaper bag. I have seen many parents go through this same ordeal and our family has found a solution that has worked for us. It’s Signing TimeMitzi and I began signing with Benjamin when he was about 6 to 8 months old. By the time he was 10 months old he could sign milk and more. We saw much success over the next couple of months and by the time he was two, just learning to talk, he could sign over 250 words. These signs ranged from colors, family members, foods, animals, and everyday language.
We are now starting to see the same success with Abby. At 15 months old she can sign: milk, more, want, water, bath, cold, hot, cat, dog, sheep, book, ball, tired, blanket, hat and her favorite - EAT! (I am sure I am missing one or two.) It has been a bonding experience to know what she is thinking/wanting and being able to respond and communicate back with her.
Apparently scientific studies suggest that “typical” children who learn sign have higher IQ scores, are better adjusted and read at an earlier age. Now we have not tested either of our children nor have pushed for any of these things as our primary desire has been to communicate with our children at a very young age.
Mitzi and I did observed that with Benjamin’s ability to communicate earlier in life, he never really when through the “terrible twos” as he was able to sign instead of throwing a tantrum. Now I know Benjamin is an exception as he is a very easy child, but we are hoping for the same with Abigail.
I know that each of us as parents have found something wonderful that has helped out our families and the development of our children – please share, I would love to hear what has worked for you!

We should try this with Khaydo. I am just afraid if he was able to say what he was thinking- he would tell me that I suck :)
I love the ideas that you and your wife have for your cute family. When we raised our family of four, we thought we had to do everything that "the book" said to do. So glad that that book is not mentioned today. Your children are handsome and beautiful. It looks like you are doing everything that is great for them. They each have such "Charisma". Is that the street you live on? I was just driving by that street Sunday as I went to hear a son and daughter-in-law speak at the 11:00 AM ward in your building.
I was wondering if you and your family would consider meeting us at Wendy's in Herriman next Saturday, April 4, for lunch? Our treat. I'll get the SanJuans to join us. I don't know the time, but I would like to get to know your wife also. I've just been thinking about this for sometime and thought I'd better ask or I'll be sorry if I don't. I will be in touch. I'm glad you are excited about lunch on Saturday. Hasn't Nic told you what an onery person I am when it comes to asking people to lunch. I'm like the wicked witch of the west. I would like it to be our treat. When I hear back from Stacy then we can decide on a time. Love to come by for a visit. Hope (interesting how many times a day we use that word) your day is going well. Mom Beal
It is SOOO fun to see "A" sign to you. Your kids are so smart! We love it.
Saturday about noon at Wendys? It was okay with the SanJuans so we will all meet there. It should be fun. Glad we were all free for an hour on the day with such short notice. Thanks so much. Mom Beal
Too cool!
I agree with the signing time! I have to admit that I have not been as good at signing with Jordan as I was with Cael. Cael learned to talk really early and now never seems to stop! Jordan does say a few words but really likes to scream to get what she is after! I really thinks she just does this just beacuse she knows how much Raynel loves it! So happy to have found your blog! We just love your cute family!
That is awesome! I have actually heard a few people say how great signingtime is. I think we may try this if/when we have another little one!
